Help Me Find a Drug Rehab Center

Virginia

The state of Virginia is known for its agriculture (cattle, poultry, dairy, tobacco and soybeans) as well as its industry (transportation equipment, textiles, food processing and printing), yet there is a growing issue in the state that often doesn’t receive the attention it deserves, Virginia’s drug abuse and addiction problem. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides national and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs (including non-medical use of prescription drugs), and mental health in the United States. In their most recent survey, 7.33 percent of Virginia residents reported using illicit drugs in the past month. The national average was 8.02 percent. Additionally, 3.13 percent of Virginia residents reported using an illicit drug other than marijuana in the past month (the national average was 3.58 percent). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - National Vital Statistics Reports Volume 58, Number 19 for 2007 reported that as a direct consequence of drug use, 713 persons died in Virginia in 2007. This is compared to the number of persons in Virginia who died from motor vehicle accidents (1,081) and firearms (825) in the same year. Virginia drug-induced deaths (9.2 per 100,000 population) were lower than the national rate (12.7 per 100,000). The Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program became operational in 2003 under Chapter 25.2 of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia, which was enacted in 2002. The Program, which falls under the Virginia Department of Health Professions, monitors controlled substances in Schedules II, III, and IV. Data is collected bi-weekly. In 2008, nearly 12 million prescription records were collected.

Treatment Episode Data Set, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that during 2009, marijuana was the most commonly cited drug among Virginia residents entering drug rehab. After marijuana followed cocaine, other/unknown, heroin, other opiates, stimulants, tranquilizers, sedatives, hallucinogens, inhalants and PCP.
